THE BOTTOM

For a surfer the bottom defines the type of waves that will break. A rocky bottom generates regular but often not very powerful waves. A sandy bottom of the waves more hollow and very conducive to creating tubes. The coral bottom is the Grail of bottoms. Because He draws and produces often perfect waves that break tirelessly in the same place while unrolling in the same way. More legible and therefore more predictable waves to chain maneuvers. Coral bottoms that we see scrolling under the boards while rowing in the transparent green waters of the Indian or Pacific Ocean. For a watchmaker, the bottom defines the rear part of the watch which closes the case. Our watch bottom is green too and it is transparent like those tropical waters. Through this signature caseback, we let appear the perpetual movement of the automatic movements that we fit together. A tireless and regular movement like the waves that have been breaking for millennia on the Indonesian coral reefs. A movement like an alternation. The alternation of a caliber or the ocean… Full speed ahead!

AM

And if we go this time to the bottom of things. To explain the invisible and write a substantive subject. The French language likes these polysemous words which, sometimes, are expressed completely lost. The bottom, therefore. It is a noun – masculine – which designates the lowest and most peripheral part of something. It is generally used to evoke an extreme point, a fundamental idea or even content as opposed to form. Add an “s” to it and it all falls apart! We then speak of a property, an exploited or built land. The fund is also synonymous with capital, cash but also cultural and immaterial resources; books or works held by an institution or museum.

It is at this level of analysis that the Romans come to our aid. These two words indeed come from the old French fons and especially from the Latin fundus which designated both the "fund" of an object and the "fund" of land, that is to say a property or an area. And in watchmaking, what does it look like? By dint of doing the bottoms of the drawers, it seemed important to us to speak to you from the bottom of our hearts. Among watchmakers, this word is used by associating it with what cannot be seen. Because the caseback designates the deepest part of the watch: the caseback, its hidden face, its secret and therefore fundamental surface. If the dial of a watch is its face, its caseback is probably its mystery and perhaps its truth.

At March LA.B, the living souls have always been at the bottom of the hold and the execution of the case backs is governed by two immutable rules, with some exceptions: transparency and green. Since the birth of the brand, March LA.B has thus shed light on the movements that drive its watches thanks to transparent case backs. Transparent? Yes, but not only. The crystals allowing the mechanical movements to be admired are tinted in house green. It's a matter of elegance and consistency. A fundamental question. The expression “à fond” means “to the end”. So, if the back of a case is inaccessible at first glance, it often signals the deep reality of a brand. And, at March LA.B, this background has a good background.
